As you know, deer that are not hit in a vital (kill) zone often have enough adrenaline to cover a surprising amount of ground. (If only they would just collapse near by...) They’ll usually head for the closest place where they feel safe—thick bedding cover, a creek bottom, a ditch, tall grass, or another secluded area where they can hide.

If the deer is wounded but still mobile, it may also seek out water. While not every wounded deer heads to a creek or pond, many hunters find deer in low-lying areas, creek beds, swamps, or near other sources of water because these locations provide both cover and cooler temperatures.

One thing many hunters don’t expect is that a deer may actually circle back toward the area where it was shot. In some cases, deer will make a large loop and return near the original location, especially if they believe they’ve escaped danger or are trying to get back to familiar bedding or travel routes. Because of this, it’s important not to assume the deer only traveled in a straight line away from the shot.

Every recovery is different. Shot placement, terrain, weather, pressure from people, and the deer’s condition all affect where it ultimately ends up. That’s why taking your time, avoiding unnecessary pressure, and using every available tool—including thermal drone technology when appropriate—can significantly improve the chances of a successful recovery.
